Photo Album 19 Continued- Jerusalem

The streets outside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher were lined with merchants attempting to sell anything and everything they could.

My humble sleeping area at the Citadel Hostel. The bathroom was behind the wall with the night scene painted on it.

In my attempt to get money out of an ATM machine, the machine took my card an wouldn't give it back. I had no way to read the screen for instructions because they were all written in Hebrew.

Another visit to the Wailing Wall. Two candles on the menorah had been lit.

Street signs were written in Hebrew, Arabic, and English.

A tile floor from The Church of the Holy Sepulcher that depicted Noah's Ark, complete with rainbow.

Around the Ark were sets of two animals.

Yet another visit to the Wailing Wall. This time I'm in the picture too.

One of the two domes inside The Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Jesus was in the very center of the dome.

Arches around the dome were covered with images of saints and gospel writers.

A large, back hall at The Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

An organ was tucked away in a back corner of The Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Several flights of steps lead deep into the ground. These were the oldest parts of the church that were the least affected when the church burned on two different occasions. The brickwork on both sides of the stairs were covered in carved crosses dating back to the crusades.

An unusual painting of Jesus (at least I am assuming so since he has a crown of thorns), but oddly reminiscent of the beheading of John the Baptist. There were several paintings depicting the severed head of John the Baptist.

The stairwell leading to the lowest point in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the place were Helena is buried.

The grave of Constantine's mother, Helena.

A return visit to the site of the crucifixion. I noticed the star burst symbol on the floor is the same as the star burst at the site of Jesus' birth.

A mosaic of Jesus' crucifixion just to the right of the site of the cross. Mary is standing over the body of Jesus, while Mary Magdalene is kneeling at his feet.

Stars covered the ceiling of the site where the cross stood. This reminded me of the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs that also had stars on the ceiling.

A woman lights candles in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

The Church of Mary's Dormition (CMD), the church where Catholics believe Mary went to sleep forever (not to be mistaken with death).

A mosaic in the CMD.

In a deep chamber of The CMD, were mosaics of women from the bible. This is Ruth.

Esther.

Eve.

The tomb of King David.

Another view of the Jewish graves on the Mount of Olives.

The Church of All Nations, which was built in the Garden of Gethsemane.

I attended a Roman Catholic mass at the Church of All Nations, which was held only in Latin and Italian. Afterwards I followed the Italian congregants into the actual garden, which is usually fenced off to prevent people from entering.
